Coronavirus death toll climbs to 1,873 globally

Yesterday, on 17th February, 93 more people died of the coronavirus in Hubei province on Monday, raising the death toll in the epicenter since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak to 1,789.

040Five additional deaths were reported in mainland China on Monday, increasing the death toll there to 98, according to China’s National Health Commission (NHC). Of the 98 deaths reported Monday, 93 were in Hubei Province.

041The additional five deaths across all of mainland China brings the death toll to 1,868 in China. That brings the global death toll to 1,873. There have been five deaths reported outside of mainland China with one death in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and France.

042Hubei authorities confirmed an additional 1,807 cases of the virus in Hubei on Monday, which brings the total number of cases in the epicenter of the outbreak to 59,989.

043According to the health authority, 41,957 patients have been hospitalized in Hubei, including 1,853 who are in critical condition. The health authority said 7,862 patients have been discharged.

044The global number of confirmed coronavirus cases now exceeds 73,335 with the vast majority of cases in mainland China.

045Cruise ship evacuation: Another 99 cases have been confirmed aboard the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan. The US has evacuated more than 300 Americans from the ship. Canada, Italy and Hong Kong are also sending flights for their citizens.

Westerdam: An American woman was confirmed to have the virus, after almost 1,500 fellow passengers departed the ship docked in Cambodia for onward travel. Some people still on board the Westerdam, and some others are in hotels in Phnom Penh.

047Decline in new cases: Recent data from around the world - and in particular from China - appear to show a decline in new cases. The World Health Organization says the new data must be analyzed "cautiously."
 

Not a pandemic: Michael Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Program, said the organization is still not classifying the coronavirus outbreak a "pandemic" because they were not seeing an "efficient community transmission outside of China."
 

Travel restrictions: Almost half of China's population - 780 million people - is living under some form of travel restrictions, as authorities attempt to contain the novel coronavirus outbreak. Restrictions of varying degrees are being enforced in various provinces and cities across mainland China including Hubei, Liaoning, Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai.
